2023’s what to watch

Movies to definitely go see in theaters this year

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The sequel to the highly acclaimed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was released in 2018. This movie has promise venturing more into the Multiverse concept than the previous movie. Animated in the same style as “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” we will see a return of Miles Morales as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Trailer

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

A promising conclusion to James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” we will see a return of our characters dealing with the aftermath of losing Gamora in “Avengers: Infinity War.” The trailer shows a lot of promise and does an excellent job of setting the stakes for this final movie. Trailer

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
It’s been 15 years since the last Indiana Jones film “Kingdom of The Crystal Skull” was released in 2008. This will be the first Indiana Jones released by Disney since the purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. Something interesting to note is this is the first film to not be directed by Steven Spielberg with James Mangold, director of “Ford v Ferrari” and “Logan,” taking over as director. However, Spielberg will still be involved as an executive producer. This will also be the final movie for Harrison Ford with him portraying older Indiana Jones on his final adventure. This will be a fun, action-packed summer blockbuster with a lasting conclusion for the beloved franchise. Trailer

Barbie
The beloved Mattel toy line is finally getting its very own live-action movie. The lead actors will be Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken respectively. There is a lot of excitement buzzing around this movie, yet there isn’t too much known about the overall plot, so anything is possible. This is Greta Gerwig’s largest project with a budget of $100 million. I, along with a lot of people, am thrilled about this movie. Trailer

Oppenheimer
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming summer blockbuster is centered around Robert Oppenheimer, the creator of the atomic bomb. This is a very intriguing story to choose to tell because Oppenheimer famously regretted creating a weapon of mass destruction. He famously quoted Hindi scripture after seeing the first atomic bomb being tested saying, “Now I am becoming death, the destroyer of worlds.” This movie has a very eerie settlement while also considering how much death and conflict the weapon has brought. This movie has an all-star cast with Cillian Murphey starring as Oppenheimer. Not too much is known about the movie, but it holds a lot of promise with an incredible filmmaker like Nolan being behind the project. Trailer

Beau Is Afraid

The movie is from future horror legend Ari Aster, the mind behind “Hereditary” and “Midsommar.” Starring Joaquin Phoenix, there isn’t too much revealed about the plot in the trailer, but enough to get a good idea there is a lot to be looking forward to. Trailer
