From week one to week three, the 2024-2025 National Football League (NFL) has seen electrifying plays by teams, rookies showcasing their raw talent to the world and veterans showing everyone that they still got it. However, the question still remains: Who will win the Super Bowl and become the best team in the NFL for the 2024-2025 season? Will it be a repeat of Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs? Or will an underdog emerge and claim the Super Bowl?
The two teams with the best odds:
ESPN predicts the Kansas City Chiefs to win the Super Bowl and make history by becoming the first team to win the Super Bowl three times in a row. They also competed at the Super Bowl in 2021 but couldn’t win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs franchise quarterback, a two-time MVP (most valuable player in the league) and a three-time Super Bowl MVP (most valuable player in the Super Bowl), accelerates the Chiefs’ chances of a three-peat. The Chiefs interesting offense and dominating defense threatens any team that tries to stop them.
Another team is the San Francisco 49ers, who went to the SuperBowl last in 2020 and 2024 but lost both times to the Kansas City Chiefs. Their top five offense and elite defense combine for a team that is the most well-rounded in the NFL. With Brock Purdy as their quarterback, Christian McCaffery as running back and other Pro Bowl-level stars on their team, this team is a force to be reckoned with. Their consistency of having playoff success will not fail this year.
“I think the 49ers have a solid team but I do think the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl because of their confidence and experience,” senior Ava McKelvey said.
Potential for underdogs:
The potential for underdogs (teams with a low chance of success) is low for this season. However, the Houston Texans are the most likely to be a triumphant underdog. Last year, the Texans were projected to be the worst team in the NFL, but with the emergence of quarterback CJ Stroud, they made it to the divisional round of the playoffs last year. With their new acquisitions of wide receiver Stefon Diggs and edge rusher Danielle Hunter, the Texans have a real chance to make it to the Super Bowl and win for the first time in their team’s history.
Another underdog team is the Green Bay Packers who went to the playoffs last year. However, their chances are in jeopardy due to their quarterback Jordan Love sustaining an injury against the Eagles on September 6. Jordan Love was a big reason the Packers made it to the playoffs last year. His IQ of the game makes everyone around him better. With Love being injured, the Packers will struggle this year and possibly have a losing record, falling short of making the playoffs this season. If they can win a couple of games without Love, they may push to the playoffs when he returns with the help of other teams losing.
“I would say the Texans are the best team to win as an underdog because they have a better wide receiver core, and CJ Stroud has been doing good,” senior Maxwell Chan said.
In summary, the potential for records being broken and underdogs proving themselves are extremely exciting and hopeful for fans. This 2024-2025 NFL season will be exciting to watch as we see rookies shine, veterans give their last push, dominating teams show why they’re the best in the league and all teams strive to win the Super Bowl.
