Music artists have spread their songs to millions of fans across the globe. Their songs can positively affect their listener by improving their mental state and raising their moods. However, how do music artists do it?
During the 1980s, many minority groups were mistreated and about to be left behind due to discrimination and racial injustice. However, a famous artist who rose to popularity during this time and strived for change was singer and entertainer Michael Jackson. His success in a predominately white music industry paved the way for more black representation in music. He showcased his ideas of change in some of his songs. For example, in “They Don’t Care About Us,” he showcases the discrimination of minority groups around the world. A lyric from this song says, “Black man, black mail, throw the brother in jail.” This emphasizes that police throw black men in jail because of their race. Another lyric in this song, “But if Martin Luther was living / He wouldn’t let this be,” implies that Martin Luther showcased that everyone should be treated equally. His ability to spread his ideas of change gained momentum among his fans, who eventually pushed for equality and change.
Another name that comes to mind when considering an artist’s influence is singer Pharell Williams. His song “Happy” shows his idea that nothing can bring him down because he is too happy. The idea that Williams makes in this song impacts society to follow in the footsteps to be happy and ongoing. This mostly resonates with many of his young fans and influences them to reach their goals and aspirations.
Finally, Bob Marley’s discography constantly talks about showing love and compassion to people with disadvantages in life. His songs are from his experiences of being oppressed in life due to poverty and racial discrimination. They talk about spreading messages of peace, fighting against oppression and pushing for social change.
From making the public aware of discrimination and change for the new world to motivating the young generation to reach their goals, music has a way of positively influencing society. As it has been for centuries, music can inspire new generations to make positive changes for a better society.
