A heart racing, quick paced marathon of fast pitches that never end until the seventh inning. Softball, something far from its name, is played with a rock solid, bright yellow, 12 inch ball. The sport was originally made as a way to play baseball indoors, and it utilized underhand pitches and a softer ball to allow offseason baseball players to practice. Eventually, softball entered the outdoor realm, playing on fields too small for baseball and living freely by vague means. While debated, many historians agree the first women’s softball team came about in 1895 in Chicago at West Division High School. Coming back to the present, the softball season has begun at Bridgeland High School.
“The softball community is amazing. I have made many friends and memories from softball that I will never forget,” senior Rylie Marquart said.
There are a variety of positions in softball, from the pitcher to a shortstop. There’s a spot on the team for everyone to try. Softball moves quickly with only two rounds per inning. There are three strikes per inning. Then, you’re out and the other team gets a chance to bat. Just like any other sport, many difficulties come with it. Every player will have their discouraging moments, but it’s all about how you handle it that makes one a good player.
“Making mistakes can be discouraging, but they are an opportunity to learn and improve,” senior Avery Marquart said.
Players need to consistently juggle athleticism, quick thinking and passion to be well rounded. Practices go for around two and a half hours to prepare for games. Running bases, team defense and fundamentals: catching, hitting, throwing, etc. are all a part of the softball experience that is constantly exercised.
“The practices can be very difficult and challenging, but that’s why our program is so great,” Marquart said.
After clocking out of the field, the players bond outside of school with team dinners. In addition, escape rooms and rope courses are a way players get together and connect. These activities keep the energy alive during practices and games because of the close friendships throughout the team.
“I always enjoy hanging out with my teammates, and creating relationships with my coaches that will last a lifetime,” Rylie said.
Many components factor into softball that many downplay. The mental preparation and physical skills make it just as hard as baseball. However, baseball is considered harder due to the larger scale field, but the larger field is the reason baseball is arguably easier. According to Leagueapps, experiments led by Sport Science confirmed that softball is harder because they have a 20% less reaction time. Even so, every player dedicates their time to push the team to be the best one on the field. Through the ups and downs, the softball team stands together, supporting each other through everything. The softball team stayed at the beginning of the year with an overall standing of 5-4 for the 2024-2025 season. They still have a long season ahead of them to take on the competition and run the field.
“There is a lot more time and dedication that goes into our success than what someone might assume,” Avery said.
