Debut novel conspires to impress
Olivia A. Cole creates a world of mystery and romance in this twisted, secret-filled novel “A Conspiracy Of Stars.”
Over 40 years has passed since the human race left Earth and came to the planet Faloiv. Since then the human race has learned to coexist with the indigenous people, the Faloii, by adhering to their rules of respecting the planet and leaving them isolated from mankind. To follow in her parents footsteps, Octavia’s one goal is to become a Whitecoat, one of the scientists charged with studying Faloiv. With a newly elected council leader in charge, things turn extreme, such as her father sneaking away at late hours, and returning with one of the Faloii. Now, with the help of the quiet hacker Rondo and her analytical best friend Alma, they hope to uncover a secret that could destroy the world. Then again so could the truth.
While this book may take place on a different planet with a different environment, it’s described in such detail that you can create an image in your mind while leaving the rest to be filled in by your imagination. Much like the novel “Cinder,” the romance is put second, leaving more room for more thrilling and fantasy filled scenes. While not completely put aside, the romance is there as a relaxing, breathing point so you don’t get too overwhelmed by theory filled thoughts.
For those who enjoy a science fiction novel that will leave you questioning everything from Olivia’s teachers to the wondrous forests of Faloiv. I personally am a big fan of all the different technology and animals, they all intrigue me so I want to learn more about them. If I could change one thing about this book I would want a better explanation of Octavia’s grandmother’s past and how the human race actually got there. With this being her debut YA novel, there will always be flaws in writing, but in this book they aren’t really noticeable unless you really look for them.
