Style Evolution through Quarantine

Fashion is evolving. One day, everyone shuns a classic pair of jorts and the next day, it sells out online because Gigi Hadid wore them in a five-second TikTok clip. As styles go in and out of trend, teens look to social media and other forms of inspiration to form their own personal look. Over a seven month quarantine period, how did Bridgeland teens update their perspectives on fashion as a whole?

How has quarantine impacted your fashion taste?
“I think definitely because of quarantine, I don’t feel the need to dress a certain way because at our school there is a certain set of clothes that people feel comfortable wearing. But then at home, I feel comfortable wearing whatever I want. Now I actually feel comfortable wearing like, fun jeans,or baggy jeans.”

Where are some of your favorite places to get clothes? And what are some of your favorite items of clothing?
“I’m really trying to start shopping ethically but it’s really hard. I love thrifting, also Zara has a nice sustainable line with good Brandy Melville dupes. Pacsun is really cool too and I really recommend this app called goodonyou and it basically tells you what places are sustainable and what not. For clothes I really like cropped button up cardigans and shoelace belts.”

How has quarantine impacted your fashion taste?
“I haven’t been able to go shopping a lot because of quarantine but for the most part, a lot of time spent researching on the internet has educated me on the effects of fast fashion, so now I’m really trying to avoid that and buy second hand more than I used to. It’s extremely difficult to always find and buy from ethical brands, especially since a lot of times, they are very expensive. But I like to always be on the lookout and once it is safer to do so, I will be going to secondhand stores a lot more.”

Where are some of your favorite places to get clothes? And what are some of your favorite items of clothing?
“A lot of my coolest pieces of clothing have been from Goodwill or Amazon. However, I’m currently looking for a better online seller than Amazon to buy specific pieces without worrying about where or how they were made. I have become pretty obsessed with argyle sweaters and pleated skirts.”

How has quarantine impacted your fashion taste?
“I have had more time to experiment with different styles and more daring stuff since I can’t go out. Plus, if an outfit looks stupid I’m the only one who has seen it since I stay home all day so I won’t have that insecurity like how I would if I was going out. I’ve also spent much more time on Pinterest over these past months; I’ve developed quite the board for my closet, which has improved my fashion sense and changed the way I look at different pieces.”

Where are some of your favorite places to get clothes? And what are some of your favorite items of clothing?
Pacsun, Brandy Melville, or Goodwill. I am a firm believer in thrifting, I’ve been doing it since 4th grade and I’ve found some of the coolest stuff at thrift stores. It’s always so much fun to try and guess what the stories behind the clothes are. Some of my favorite pieces that I actually wear would have to be my mickey mouse turtleneck that I found at Goodwill back in February or this red V-neck sweater with white detailing that I found the other day at yet again, Goodwill.”

Denny Hwang (Senior)

How has quarantine impacted your fashion taste?
“I guess there’s really no such thing as improving fashion because fashion has preferences from different people but on my standards, I definitely like [my sense of] fashion more than before. I am able to focus on myself and [I love] clothing, so it definitely had me more interested in my fashion taste.”

Where are some of your favorite places to get clothes? And what are some of your favorite items of clothing?
“[I like] Yesstyle, Abercrombie, and Uniqlo. [For clothing items], it’s graphic tees and a solid pair of jeans.”
