Bears take the crown
Varsity football wins big in Homecoming game.
Bridgeland’s varsity football team defeated Langham Creek on Friday, Sept. 24 for their first district win of the season.
The Bears entered their first district game following a bye week. They remain undefeated, beating the Langham Creek Lobos 48-16.
Offense for both teams struggled in the opening minutes, resulting in a 3-0 score favoring Bridgeland at the end of the first quarter. As the first half progressed, the Bears fumbled the ball twice and both teams’ defenses stayed tight. Senior wide receiver Andrew Maleski said Bridgeland’s offense needed to keep the right mindset.
“[We had to] just keep playing, keep trusting our offense and put our trust in the coaches to make plays,” Maleski said.
At halftime Bridgeland was leading 13-3 after the offense struggled throughout the first half. Maleski said halftime helped the Bears offense adjust to the Lobo’s defense.
“We had to really just execute more and look at the coverages and find the soft spots in defense,” Maleski said.
Bridgeland’s offense surged in the second half behind senior quarterback Connor Weigman’s two rushing touchdowns. A few plays later, senior defensive back Graham Gillespie returned an interception for a touchdown showing how dominant the Bears were. The Bears ended the third quarter up 41-16. Sophomore Noah Allen-Cuellar punched in the final touchdown with around three minutes left in the fourth quarter to extend the Bear lead to 32 and close out the game 48-16.
With the game against Langham Creek complete, Bridgeland prepares for their game against Cy-Woods. The game will take place on Thursday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. at Pridgeon Stadium.
