The field is a harsh and often detrimental location with how cruel it can be on certain players who walk on it. Specifically those brave enough to face the opposing team, and the hardships that come with doing so. However, one player took it upon himself to not only face the danger, but help others also face it at the same time. This player is senior Ryan Fodje, the Bridgeland High School football player known for his skill and grit.
Throughout Bridgeland High School’s short existence, it’s seen the rise of several players who went out of their way to make a lasting impact on the team they were a part of such as Conner Weigman, a player filled with so much talent. He went to Texas A&M. This year’s player, #71, Fodje, who is well known for being a worthy asset to the Bridgeland Bears.
As an offensive lineman, he continues to show off his talent and commitment to the Bridgeland Bears with his willingness to bring home the big win. When Fodje is on the field, he is locked in as all he can think about is the game he’s playing.
“Nothing else matters besides the win on the field,” Fodje said. “So even though I have a sprained ankle right now, whatever it takes to get the win, I’ll do it.”
Ryan’s friends and family were always there to cheer him on through his games and encourage him to get back up whenever he fell.
“They were all happy for me,” Fodje said. “It’s awesome to have a support system behind you who loves you.”
When Fodje proved himself as a talented player, he became instrumental in leading the Bridgeland Bears. Not just in helping them win the games but also in giving others on the team the confidence to do the same thing.
“If not the best lineman, definitely the best leader on our team,” junior Ty Sexton said. “He leads very well. A lot of people follow him and play good after he plays good.”
Players with this level of dedication have a set-in-stone goal and Fodje’s is making the Oklahoma Sooners college football team. Despite all the struggles that come with needing to participate in a team with this high level of skill, he is choosing to continue in the sport of football.
“Just the mental aspect to be honest,” Fodje said. “Like getting to know the playcalls, the atmosphere, it’s a whole different level. College football especially.”
Fodje has made it clear he enjoys going out on the field and showing off what he’s capable of. He was instrumental in carrying his team to the playoffs with a score of 10-1. This is what led him to the decision of joining the ranks of the Sooners and the acceptance of all the challenges he’ll have to face when he arrives.
“There was a video of him with all the Oklahoma staff,” senior Stephen Bright said. “They were telling him good luck and all that. I think he and the coaches at Oklahoma are already pretty close.”
Of course, once those challenges are out of the way, Fodje is nearly guaranteed to find an experience he will remember for the rest of his life. He understands that the team is hailed as the king of college football for their monumental achievements.
“The coaches, the atmosphere [and] the culture there is amazing,” Fodje said. “They have good talent there, and I truly believe in what they stand for.”
Fodje’s determination has brought his current team to the playoffs, and he intends for them to go all the way. Either way, being on the Bridgeland Bears team has left an immensely positive impact on him that will forever remain in his heart.
“It’s shaped me in a way that allowed me to be humble by myself,” Fodje said. “Keep my head up, continue to thrive and inspire the people.”
For a high school football player, Fodje has shown immense potential in his encouraging nature and overwhelming sense of competitiveness. His impact on the Bridgeland Bears football team will remain for years to come. In the meantime, Fodje will always be moving forward toward his goal of becoming something beyond what he originally believed himself to be capable of.
“I’ll throw [down] all adversity and challenges,” Fodje said. “I think God is going to take me through the morning, [and] allow me to play.”
